This commentary set is a must-have. It's part of a trio, alongside insightful works by Merrill and Patterson.
Joel
The prophet Joel delivers a powerful message about a future filled with both blessings and judgment. His book highlights two major events: a devastating locust plague and the Day of the Lord. Joel urges the people of Judah to repent in the wake of the locust disaster, promising that God will restore and bless them anew. This sets the stage for his broader message about the coming Day of the Lord.
Amos
Amos addresses a society that is religious but not righteous, focusing on the injustices perpetrated by the rich and powerful against the poor in Israel. He emphasizes that true worship of the Lord cannot be separated from how one lives daily. While his message is filled with judgment and condemnation, Amos ends with a hopeful vision of Israel and Judah united in justice and prosperity.
Obadiah
Obadiah tells a tale of betrayal. When the Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem in 586 B.C., Edom, instead of helping Judah, betrayed them. As a consequence, God promises that Edom will also fall due to betrayal by its allies. Obadiah expands this theme to all nations, declaring that when the Day of the Lord arrives, "the kingdom will be the Lord’s."
